All About Us
MicroBiome Science
Equine Microbiome together Equibiome UK host the first dedicated laboratory service in Europe and Australia (now available in the US) using advance next generation sequencing technology to produce a real time snap shot of the internal microbial community and their functionality in the gastrointestinal tract.

The data produced by the test provides valuable insight into the forces at work within our horse’s bodies. Diet, metabolism, energy, vitamins and amino acids production which together contribute to the overall health and well being of our horses.
Equine MicroBiome and Equibiome have the largest library of equine data in the world.
In order to create our extensive database faecal samples have been gathered and analysed from thousands of horses including thoroughbreds in training, the Wild Carneddau ponies, Native ponies, horses at livery and obese horses. Also from horses with Laminitis, Colic, Gut ulcers Sarcoids, Diarrhoea, Lyme's, Grass Sickness, Infect ions, Hind Gut Discomfort , Faecal Water Syndrome, with Temperament and Unsoundness Problems including tendon and joint problems. Horses On Medication such as antibiotics, NSAID's and Ant acids.

Even so, in horses, the knowledge and science linking microbiome to health and disease, are in their infancy. In humans this is much more advanced because of the larger database of samples. It is our aim to gather as many samples of different groups (populations) of horses as we can, this will help to increase our knowledge, offering the best and most accurate service.
Mi·Cro·Bi·Ome
Entire collection of microbes living in and on the body
The microbiome is the entire collection of microbes living in and on the body. The microbiome forms a living layer over the skin and parts of the inside of the body, including the lungs and the digestive tract, from the mouth all the way down to the colon. When the microbes in your horse’s gut are out of balance, their body can't absorb nutrients the way it should. The result of this is inflammation, the root of almost every chronic disease.

Recommendation are backed by science and unique to your horse
Horses have a microbiome that is home to thousands of microbes, with links to immune function, energy and nutrient availability which in turn affects health and performance.
RNA sequencing allow us to accurately pinpoint levels of all the good and bad gut microbes as well as their functionality and make personalised recommendations on how best to increase or reduce them through dietary changes.
Good gut bacteria such as bifidobacterial, actinobacteria, and lactobacillus , help to form a barrier against invasion from pathogenic bacteria, the barrier is called the 'Resistome’. Many of our horses have low levels of these good gut bacteria which has been linked to stress especially in athletics performance horses.
